چکیده
People write to ask me if the dose is to be half a drachm or half an ounce, so it is as well to say half an ounce unmistakably, or the drug might fall into undeserved disrepute. I am asked if the patients whose swollen legs I describe may not have been suifering from Beri-beri. I believe not. The cases yielded readily to the usual antiscorbutic treatment, while Beri-beri requires turpentine.

Infantile scurvy: a historical perspective.
Scurvy, a disease of dietary deficiency of vitamin C, is uncommon today. Among diseases, scurvy has a rich history and an ancient past. The Renaissance (14th to 16th centuries) witnessed several epidemics of scurvy among sea voyagers. In 1747, James Lind, a British Naval surgeon, performed a carefully designed clinical trial and concluded that oranges and lemons had the most antiscorbutic effec...

متن کاملScurvy and cloudberries: a chapter in the history of nutritional sciences.
We translated two Latin texts about scurvy. One is by Ambrosius Rhodius, who in 1635 published his doctoral thesis on scurvy. This contains aspects of 16th- and 17th-century folklore medicine. The other is a 1593 letter by Henrik Høyer (Hoierus), a German physician in Bergen, Norway. The letter states that in Norway grew a plant, Chamaemorus Norvegicus, whose berries had curative abilities agai...
متن کاملDISCOVERY OF THE CAUSES OF SCURVY: Could Artificial Intelligence have saved a few centuries?
Historical observations of cases of scurvy have been collected in the medical literature and given as inputs to the symbolic induction system CHARADE. The rules which were produced by the system simulate well the explanation given to scurvy in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, the results tend to show the importance of the implicit knowledge of the scientists, or their induction bias, to ex...

Scurvy is a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. This disease is rare in developed countries, but can occur in developing countries that face food shortages and humanitarian crises. In these countries, the diagnosis is often missed due to the lack of adequate diagnostic equipment. We report a case of scurvy in a 2-year-old boy who was diagnosed late by radiographic findings, which sugge...
متن کاملScurvy in a Child with Cerebral Palsy- The Forgotten Vitamin
Scurvy was the first vitamin deficiency disease to be described. However it is seldom seen in the pediatric age group. It is often missed, especially amongst physically and mentally disabled patients who form a high risk group for this disease. Scurvy can present with a varied spectrum of signs and symptoms. Here we present a case of scurvy in a child with cerebral
